In this fabulous season opener,
the society will offer some of the most interesting and
beautiful of Mozart’s works — his energetic and youthful Te
Deum; the elegant little motet for the Feast of St.
John the Baptist, Inter natos mulierum; and the
deeply moving Litany to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To prepare the palate for this Mozart feast, the Society
will begin with a delightful Bach aperitif.
The Society sings Parts II and
III of Handel’s consummate masterwork, again under the
direction of Texas’ leading interpreter of Baroque music.
Hear the dramatic retelling of the Messiah’s suffering,
death, resurrection, ascension and reign, presented as it
might have been performed during Handel’s lifetime.
Well-known Austin contralto
Julia Lacy Armstrong, a regular singer and soloist with
the Society, joins premier pianist and scholar David Mead
for a relaxed evening of songs and commentary, ranging
from the familiar to the slightly off-the-wall, presented
in the informal atmosphere of Sumners Hall at St. David’s
Episcopal Church.
The Society’s accompanist since
1989, Elaine Dykstra will be joined by Paula White for an
evening of works for two harpsichords. Mrs. Dykstra is a
frequent performer with the UT Early Music Ensemble, the
Texas Early Music Project, and the Austin Handel-Haydn
Society. Paula White is the organist and choir director
at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, and is the past Dean
