The Austin Symphony’s high school series, one of the few in the country, is now in its 13th year. Led by Guest Conductor David Stevens, the Austin Symphony will offer a program especially designed for the high school audience. The program includes Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Ives/Schuman’s Variations on America, Ward/Bates/Whitney’s From Sea to Shining Sea (with high school chorus) and Copland’s Lincoln Portrait. Orchestra and band members from each school will join the ASO in playing Variations on America at their school.

A highlight of each concert will be the appearance of high school soloists — the winners of the Austin Symphony Youth Awards — chosen through auditions held by the Austin District Music Teachers’ Association and the Symphony in cooperation with the University of Texas and the Austin Independent School District. Christina Tam will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto in C minor at Round Rock High School, Ruth Marie Bridge will perform Wienawski’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor with the orchestra at Anderson and Johnston High Schools and Darrick Chang will play Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 in D major at LBJ and Crockett High Schools.

The Bowie High School Concerts’ young soloist is T.J. Wade from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. He will play "The Entertainer" from The Red Back Book by Scott Joplin.

If you would like to attend one of the High School Concerts, or need more information, please call Nan Schwetman, Anne Lasseigne or Diana Eblen at 476-6064.

ASO performances and programs are partially funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Commission on the Arts. All programs, artists and dates are subject to change.
