Toot a horn, listen to a story, enjoy a dance or music performance — all at the Austin Symphony’s Children’s Day Art Park, which begins Wednesday, June 5, from 9:30 – 12 noon at Symphony Square, 11th & Red River. Beto y los Fairlanes will open Children’s Day, which continues Wednesday mornings through August 7. (There will be no Children’s Day on July 3.) Activities each month will focus on a different group of instruments in the orchestra: June is "A String Thing," July a "Brass Blast," and August a "Woodwind Fling." In addition, mimes, magicians, storytellers and musicians will entertain young participants and the adults accompanying them.

Beginning at 9:30 am, children can visit the "Instrumental Petting Zoo" where they can try their hand at playing different instruments from the orchestra. Members of the Austin Symphony Orchestra will visit with them about their instruments and play favorite tunes. At 10 am performances especially geared for young children will be presented on stage. In addition to Beto y los Fairlanes, this year’s line-up features Joe McDermott, Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico de Texas, the Hays County Gals and many more.

After the show, children are invited to follow the Pied Piper down the "Lemonade Trail" to the Art Tent where local artisans are set up to help the children create a variety of items to take home. Admission to Children’s Day Art Park is 50 cents a child; adults are free when accompanied by a child. Lemonade is 10 cents a cup. Those attending are encouraged to pack a sack lunch and picnic on the banks of Waller Creek. For more information, call the Austin Symphony at 476-6064.

"At Children’s Day Art Park learning about the arts happens naturally!"
