Austin Lounge Lizards to Perform at Symphony’s Summer Music Festival

Sponsored by Supercuts and Vinson & Elkins

The Austin Lounge Lizards perform Saturday, August 10, at Symphony Square’s Summer Music Festival. The concert begins at 8:30 p.m.; the box office opens at approximately 7:45 p.m. Snacks and beverages are available from the adjacent Cafe Serranos. Admission is $6 per person.

"The Lizards are downright hilarious, with twisted takes on bluegrass, country and folk," according to the Providence (Rhode Island) Journal-Bulletin." Since their debut in 1980, the Lizards have received increasing recognition. They have repeatedly been selected as either the best "None-of-the-Above" band or the best bluegrass band by readers of the Austin Chronicle, sponsor of the South by Southwest Music Conference. Their first two albums, Creatures from the Black Saloon (1985) and Highway Cafe of the Damned (1989), both on Watermelon Records, were recommended by Billboard and have received airplay nationwide. Their third album, Lizard Vision, was released in July of 1991 on the Flying Fish label, and Paint Me on Velvet, their fourth, received glowing reviews from publications throughout the U.S., including the Washington Post, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, L.A. Reader, and Playboy. Last year the Lizards celebrated their 15th Anniversary with the release of a new CD, Small Minds. According to New Country Magazine, "Small Minds is a record filled with big laughs…(the CD does) justice to their sidesplitting live show, an uproarious collection of political jabs (‘Gingrich the Newt’), social satire (Truckload of Art) and the usual fractured love songs (‘Irving’).

The historic Symphony Square complex is located at 11th and Red River. Performances are held outdoors on the stage of the creekside amphitheatre. For more information call the Austin Symphony at 476-6064.
