Timothy Muffitt

ASO Associate Conductor

Timothy Muffitt has been named the Associate Conductor of the Austin Symphony. Prior to this
appointment, Muffitt was the Assistant Conductor of the Austin Symphony, responsible for the artistic development and direction of the orchestra’s summer and pops concerts along with appearances on the classical series. Muffitt also serves as Music Director of the University of Texas Orchestra.

Dr. Ronald Crutcher, Director of the School of Music at the University of Texas, says of Muffitt,
"Timothy Muffitt’s contribution to raising the overall performance level of the University Symphony Orchestra cannot be overestimated. Under his leadership, the Orchestra has soared to new heights. He’s not only a superb musician and conductor for a music school, but more importantly, an outstanding trainer. He has a good sense of how to pace rehearsals over a period of time to achieve a musically convincing performance."

Muffitt is also a frequent guest conductor with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in New Orleans. Muffitt’s highly successful Casual Classics series, now in its fourth season, continues to be one of the LPO’s most popular, seeing remarkable audience growth and support since its inception.

Guest conducting engagements have brought Muffitt to the podiums of the Virginia Symphony, Baton Rouge Opera, and the South Arkansas, Baton Rouge and New Orleans Symphony Orchestras. Prominent performers and composers with whom Muffitt has worked include Itzhak Perlman, William Warfield, Van Clibum, The Romeros, Jose Feghali, John Cage, Joseph Schwantner, Ellen Taffe Zwilich and Bernard Rands among others.

Born in Stratford, Connecticut, Muffitt began his musical studies on the piano and later added viola and trumpet. After earning undergraduate and masters degrees from Ohio State, he pursued doctoral studies at Eastman School of Music. His principal conducting teachers have been David Effron, Timothy Russell and Walter Hendl. He currently lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife Charlotte, his son Vincent and their dog Kate.
